Keywords:

This book is intended primarily as an instructional resource for teenagers and English language learners who are beginning to develop an understanding of poetry. It may also be used by English teachers as supplementary teaching material for classroom activities, guided reading, literary appreciation, vocabulary development, and creative writing. The materials are designed to encourage learners not only to understand what a poem says, but also to explore how a poem creates meaning through language, imagery, sound, structure, and literary devices.
The book presents selected poems and poetry-based learning activities organized around themes that are closely connected to the experiences and questions of young people. The thematic approach allows learners to encounter poetry through topics such as identity, personal growth, nature, emotions, imagination, creativity, and the deeper questions of life. In this way, poetry becomes a starting point for both language learning and personal reflection.
Each learning section combines literary texts with guided learning activities. Learners are encouraged to identify important vocabulary, understand words from context, interpret poetic expressions, examine literary devices, respond to comprehension questions, discuss ideas with peers, and express their own interpretations. The Vocabulary Builder sections provide contextual support for unfamiliar words and expressions, while analytical activities introduce learners to concepts such as imagery, personification, metaphor, simile, rhyme scheme, stanza, sonnet, irony, and other features of poetic language.
